A beautifully made oak pergola or porch can only look as composed as the posts beneath it. Learning how to level timber posts is therefore less about a final visual adjustment and more about establishing a precise foundation from the first setting-out line. When each post is plumb, consistently spaced and finished at the correct height, the structure above feels calm, balanced and built to last.
For a modest gate frame, this can be a careful DIY task. For larger pergolas, verandas, car ports and garden buildings, the same principles apply, but the tolerances become less forgiving. Heavy green oak, sloping ground and substantial roof loads call for considered groundwork and, often, professional installation.
Start with the right reference point
The word “level” can be misleading when working with timber posts. A post itself needs to be plumb - perfectly vertical in both directions. The tops of several posts may need to be level with one another, but not always. Where a roof requires drainage, for example, the finished post heights must follow a deliberate fall rather than sit on one horizontal line.
Before digging, decide what governs the finished height of the structure. It may be a patio threshold, an existing roof line, a decking level or a planned beam height. Choose one fixed point that will not move, such as a masonry course on the house or a clearly established paving level. Measure every other point from there.
This is especially valuable on a garden with a gentle slope. Trying to make every post appear equal from ground level can leave the beam line visibly uneven. Instead, establish the structural line first, then decide whether the posts should be trimmed to suit the ground or whether the base detailing should absorb the difference.
Set out the footprint before you dig
Accuracy is easiest to achieve while the ground is still untouched. Mark the outer corners with timber stakes, then run taut builder’s lines between them at the intended face of the posts. Check the dimensions carefully, including the diagonals. On a square or rectangular footprint, equal diagonals confirm that the corners are square.
Allow for the actual size of the post, rather than marking only its centre. A substantial oak post can be 150 mm or more across, and small errors at this stage affect beam overhangs, roof proportions and the alignment of any adjoining gate, screen or wall.
A practical setting-out kit includes:
- A long spirit level, ideally 1.8 m or longer
- A post level or two spirit levels for checking adjacent faces
- Builder’s line, stakes and a tape measure
- A laser level or rotating laser for longer runs
- Temporary timber braces, screws and a drill driver
- Gravel, concrete or post bases suited to the chosen foundation method
Choose a foundation that protects the timber
The way a post meets the ground has a direct effect on its longevity. Timber set directly into soil can be appropriate for some treated softwood fencing, but it is rarely the refined or durable choice for premium garden structures. Moisture held at ground level is the most demanding environment for timber, including naturally durable oak.
For pergolas, porches and freestanding garden features, galvanised or stainless-steel post shoes fixed to concrete pads are often the most considered solution. They lift the timber clear of standing water, allow air to circulate around the base and make accurate positioning easier. The visible steelwork can be discreetly detailed, while the oak retains its clean, substantial presence.
Concrete-set posts are sometimes specified where lateral restraint is paramount, but the post should not sit in a pocket that traps water. If using this approach, create a compacted gravel drainage layer at the base of the hole and form the concrete so it falls away from the timber. The required depth and footing size depend on soil conditions, wind exposure, post section, roof weight and the structure’s overall design. A tall, roofed structure in an exposed rural setting needs more than a standard fence-post hole.
If the project is close to a house, near drains or subject to planning or building-control requirements, obtain appropriate advice before excavating. Foundations are not the place to rely on assumptions.
How to level timber posts as you install them
Install and brace one corner post first. This is your control point, so take time over it. Position the base or post in the marked location, then check it for plumb on two adjoining faces. A post level makes this quick, although two long spirit levels held at right angles are equally effective.
Once plumb, secure the post with two temporary braces running in different directions. Fix one end of each brace to the post and the other to a firm stake driven into the ground. Do not depend on a single brace: it may hold the post in one plane while allowing movement in the other.
With the first post stable, transfer its intended top height to the next position using a laser level, water level or taut line. Set the second post to this reference, check it is plumb, and brace it before moving on. Repeat along each elevation, checking the line of post faces as well as their tops.
Do not wait until all posts are in place before making corrections. A 5 mm discrepancy is easily resolved at the second post; across a long row of uprights, it can become a conspicuous twist in the finished beam. Keep checking the dimensions between posts, the diagonal measurement across the frame and the straightness of each run as work progresses.
Where posts will carry a continuous beam, it is often wiser to leave them slightly overlength. Once the foundations have cured and the frame is confirmed square and plumb, mark a consistent cut line from the laser datum and trim the tops with a sharp saw. This produces a far cleaner result than trying to predict every final height while working around uneven ground.
Brace first, then make the permanent fix
Freshly positioned timber can move while concrete cures, particularly after rain or in a change of temperature. Keep bracing in place until the foundation has reached sufficient strength for the specified load. The curing period varies with the mix, weather and footing size, so follow the product guidance rather than treating an overnight set as a finished foundation.
Before permanently fixing beams or rafters, inspect each post again. Check verticality in both planes, beam height, spacing and diagonals. It is also worth standing back several metres to assess the composition. Instruments confirm accuracy, but the eye often catches an awkward relationship with a boundary wall, roof edge or patio joint.
For oak structures, expect natural movement as the timber seasons. Small surface checks, tonal variation and subtle changes in dimension are characteristic of authentic material, not failures in the installation. Thoughtful joints, properly sized fixings and allowance around rigid interfaces help the structure accommodate this movement gracefully.
Common mistakes that compromise the finished result
The most frequent error is checking only one face of a post. It can look upright from the front yet lean noticeably from the side. The next is using the existing ground as the guide for height. Gardens are rarely level, and even a carefully laid patio may have falls that are unsuitable for a beam line.
Another issue is pouring concrete before the post has been fully braced and verified. Once the concrete begins to stiffen, adjustments become difficult and can disturb the footing. Finally, avoid trimming every post to a nominal length before setting out. Natural ground variation means equal-length posts do not automatically produce an even structure.
When professional installation is the considered choice
A simple pair of posts for a lightweight screen may be manageable with patient preparation and the right tools. A bespoke oak veranda, glazed garden room or roofed car port is different.
