Ground Screw Foundations for Garden Buildings

Ground Screw Foundations for Garden Buildings

At Bespoke Oak and Slate, we believe that a great garden building begins long before the first timber is placed. The foundation you choose will determine the longevity, stability, and environmental impact of your structure for decades to come. That is why we offer a range of professional foundation solutions — with ground screws standing as our preferred and most recommended method.

What Are Ground Screws?

Ground screws are heavy-duty, helical steel anchors that are driven directly into the ground using specialist machinery. Rather than excavating and pouring concrete, ground screws are installed quickly, cleanly, and with minimal disruption to your garden or landscape. They are used extensively across Scandinavia and Northern Europe for everything from residential garden buildings to large-scale commercial structures — and for very good reason.

Pre-Installation Surveys: Safety First

Before any ground screw is placed, our installation team conducts a thorough pre-installation survey of your site. This is a critical step that sets our process apart and ensures the safety of your property and the longevity of your building.

We begin by searching for underground services, including:

  • Electrical cables — both mains supply and low-voltage garden circuits
  • Water pipes — including supply and drainage runs
  • Gas mains — and any associated service lines
  • Telecommunications and broadband ducting

Using cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators, we identify and mark all underground services before any ground penetration takes place. This protects your home, your garden, and our installation team.

Test Drilling for Subsurface Obstructions

Once underground services have been identified and marked, we carry out test drilling at each proposed screw location. This allows us to detect any subsurface rock, rubble, or compacted material that could affect the installation. Where rock is encountered, we adapt our approach accordingly — ensuring every ground screw is placed correctly and achieves the required depth and torque specification for your building's load requirements.

Why Ground Screws Are the Superior Foundation Choice

Ground screws offer a compelling combination of performance, speed, and environmental responsibility that no other foundation method can match.

Ecological and Non-Invasive

Unlike concrete, ground screws require no excavation, no spoil removal, and no chemical mixing. They leave virtually no trace on the surrounding landscape and can be fully removed and the ground restored to its original condition should you ever wish to relocate or remove your building. This makes ground screws the most ecologically sound foundation solution available for garden buildings today.

Exceptional Load-Bearing Capacity

Ground screws are engineered to carry significant structural loads. When installed to the correct depth and torque, they can support far greater weight than a standard concrete slab of equivalent footprint — making them ideal for our heavier garden rooms, saunas, garages, and large pavilion structures.

Speed of Installation

A full set of ground screws for a typical garden building can be installed in a matter of hours. There is no curing time, no waiting for concrete to set, and no delay to your build programme. In most cases, your building installation can begin on the same day as the foundation work — dramatically reducing the overall project timeline.

Long-Term Performance

Ground screws are manufactured from hot-dip galvanised steel, offering exceptional resistance to corrosion and ground movement. When correctly specified and installed, they will outlast the building they support — providing a stable, level platform for the lifetime of your structure and beyond.

Alternative Foundation Options

We understand that every site is different, and ground screws are not always the right solution for every situation. Where ground conditions, planning requirements, or customer preference dictate, we offer the following alternatives:

200mm Concrete Slab

A fully poured 200mm reinforced concrete slab remains a tried and tested foundation method, particularly suited to larger structures or sites with challenging ground conditions. We can design and install a concrete slab foundation to the precise dimensions of your building, ensuring a level, durable base that will stand the test of time.

Composite Pads with Post Crete

For a faster and less invasive concrete-based solution, we can install composite pads set into the ground using Post Crete. This method combines the speed of a pad foundation with the structural reliability of a concrete fixing — ideal for mid-sized garden buildings on reasonably level ground.

Composite Frame on Existing Paving

If you already have an existing patio, terrace, or paved area, we can often utilise this as the base for your new garden building. Using a purpose-built composite frame, we sit the structure directly onto the existing surface — eliminating the need for any groundworks whatsoever. This is one of the quickest and most cost-effective installation routes available, provided the existing surface is level, structurally sound, and of sufficient size.

Which Foundation Is Right for You?

Our installation team will assess your site during the survey process and recommend the most appropriate foundation solution for your specific building, ground conditions, and budget. In the majority of cases, ground screws will be our first recommendation — offering the best combination of performance, speed, ecological responsibility, and long-term value.

If you have any questions about foundation options or would like to discuss your project in more detail, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our team. We are always happy to advise.
