This is a bespoke lean-to timber pergola, built entirely on site in Preston, Lancashire — designed and constructed from scratch by our own team, with no kit, no flat-pack, and no compromises. The brief was simple: create a covered outdoor space where the customer could sit in the rain and watch the canal, or find shade on a summer afternoon. What we built does exactly that — and it looks the part too.

The structure is attached to the side of the house, with heavy pressure-treated timber posts, diagonal knee braces, and a lean-to roof finished with slate-effect shingles. Open on three sides, it frames the view across the garden and canal perfectly — sheltered from the rain above, open to the landscape all around.

Built On Site, Built to Last
This isn't a pergola kit assembled from a box. Every element was cut, fitted, and finished on site by our own team. The posts are heavy-section pressure-treated timber, the diagonal knee braces are morticed and bolted for rigidity, and the roof structure is built to carry the shingle finish properly — not just draped over a lightweight frame.

The Roof — Slate-Effect Composite tile
The lean-to roof is finished with slate-effect composite tile — a durable, low-maintenance roofing material that gives the structure a clean, traditional appearance without the weight or cost of real slate. They're fully weatherproof, UV-stable, and designed to last for decades with no maintenance required.

The View — Designed Around the Setting
The whole point of this structure is the view. The customer's garden backs onto a canal — and this pergola frames it perfectly. Sit underneath on a rainy day and you're sheltered, warm, and looking straight out across the water. On a summer afternoon, the open sides catch the breeze and the shade keeps the space cool. It's a simple idea, executed properly.
