Whether you are planning a traditional timber shed, a refined summerhouse, a garden room or a substantial oak outbuilding, learning how to prepare shed base properly protects the investment above it. It keeps doors operating cleanly, timber clear of persistent moisture and the finished structure looking composed for years to come.
A base is not simply a level patch of ground. It is the quiet, structural element that manages weight, water and movement. Get it right before delivery day and the installation itself becomes far more straightforward.
Start with the right position
Choose the site with both the building and its future use in mind. A shed tucked behind the house may be practical for storage, while a garden room or entertaining space deserves a more considered outlook, a pleasing approach and enough room for doors to open fully. Think about where people will walk, where rainwater naturally runs and how materials will reach the site.
Avoid placing a building at the lowest point of the garden, where water gathers after prolonged rain. Mature trees also require care. Their roots can make excavation difficult, and overhanging branches can shed leaves, sap and moisture onto a roof. A position with reasonable access, natural drainage and some breathing space around the exterior will make maintenance easier.
For larger or bespoke structures, check the proposed location against boundaries, existing services and any planning requirements before work begins. The rules can vary with the building’s height, position and intended use. It is far easier to resolve these details before excavation than once a base has been laid.
How to prepare a shed base: measure, mark and clear
Mark out the footprint accurately using pegs and string. Measure the building dimensions from the manufacturer’s drawings rather than estimating from a product photograph or nominal size. The base should generally be at least the same size as the building’s external footprint, and often slightly larger where a specified foundation design calls for it. A base that is too small leaves unsupported edges, while an oversized base can create an awkward ledge that channels rainwater beneath the walls.
Check the marked-out area by measuring both diagonals. If they match, the rectangle is square. This small step matters: a building installed on a skewed base may look visibly misaligned and can make fitting wall panels, doors or glazing unnecessarily difficult.
Remove turf, loose topsoil, roots and organic material from the area. Topsoil is rich and useful elsewhere in the garden, but it is not stable enough to support a permanent structure. It compresses, holds water and can settle unevenly over time. Clear down to firm subsoil, then rake the ground clean before deciding how deep the excavation needs to be.
Choose a base to suit the building and ground
There is no single best foundation for every garden building. The right choice depends on the size and weight of the structure, the soil, the slope of the site and whether the space will be used for simple storage or as a more permanent extension of the home.
Concrete slab foundations
A concrete slab is a strong, enduring choice for heavier buildings, including substantial timber workshops, garages, garden rooms and many bespoke installations. It creates a firm, level platform and distributes weight evenly across the site.
The usual preparation involves excavating to the required depth, laying and compacting a sub-base of crushed aggregate, adding an appropriate membrane where specified, and pouring concrete within secure shuttering. The finished slab must be genuinely level, not merely level-looking. Even a small fall can affect doors, windows and water run-off from the building.
Concrete is dependable, but it is not always the most sympathetic option for every garden. It requires more excavation, careful curing time and a clear plan for drainage. If the site is difficult to access, arranging concrete delivery or mixing on site can also influence the programme and cost.
Paving slab bases
Paving slabs laid on a properly compacted sub-base can work well for smaller sheds and lighter garden buildings. They offer a tidy, practical surface and can be easier to install than a full concrete slab where access is restricted.
The key is preparation beneath the slabs. Do not lay them directly onto soil or a thin bed of sand and expect a lasting result. Use a firm, well-compacted aggregate foundation, then bed and level each slab carefully. Support must be continuous beneath the building’s bearers or floor, rather than concentrated at a few corners.
Timber or ground-screw foundations
For sloping gardens, sensitive landscapes or projects where reducing excavation is desirable, an engineered timber frame or ground-screw system can be an elegant solution. These foundations raise the structure above the ground, creating airflow beneath the floor and helping to keep timber away from standing moisture.
They must be designed for the load and site conditions, not improvised from a few uneven supports. A raised base can be particularly effective for a garden office, cabin or elevated entertaining space, but it needs proper bracing, accurate levels and a considered route for steps or access.
Build drainage into the preparation
Water is the long-term enemy of any timber building base. Even the finest oak and carefully finished cladding benefit from a site that sheds water decisively. The surrounding ground should not slope towards the structure, and soil or gravel should never be piled up against timber walls.
Where ground is heavy, clay-rich or known to hold water, consider a drainage channel or gravel margin around the perimeter. Roof water also needs a destination. Plan gutters, downpipes and a suitable soakaway or drainage route before the building is installed, particularly if the roof area is generous.
Do not confuse drainage with an uneven base. The foundation itself should be level unless the building supplier has explicitly specified otherwise. Manage water in the landscape around it, rather than introducing a fall beneath the floor.
Check levels more than once
A spirit level is useful, but on a larger footprint a laser level or long straightedge provides a clearer picture. Check across the length, width and diagonals of the base. Repeat the process after compacting the sub-base, after laying slabs or shuttering, and again before the building arrives.
Compaction deserves the same attention. Aggregate that looks flat can still settle later if it has not been compacted in layers. For a permanent building, a hired plate compactor is usually a better choice than relying on hand tamping alone. The aim is a dense, stable platform that will not shift through seasons of rain, frost and dry weather.
If your garden slopes noticeably, resist the temptation to build up one side with loose soil. Cut into the slope where appropriate, retain the edge properly if needed, or use a designed raised foundation. Loose fill without containment is likely to move, taking the building out of level with it.
Allow for access, services and installation
Before the final surface is finished, think through every practical connection. A garden room may need an armoured electrical cable, data cabling, lighting, heating provision or a route for water. A workshop might need power in a particular wall position. Running services beneath or beside the base before installation keeps the finished setting clean and avoids later disruption.
Access is equally significant. Panels, roof components, glazing and timber beams can be large and heavy. Ensure there is a workable route from the roadside or driveway to the garden, and tell the installation team about narrow gates, steps, steep gradients or delicate surfaces in advance. For a premium structure, this preparation helps protect both the materials and the wider garden.
Leave enough clear space around the finished building for exterior treatment, gutter maintenance and occasional cleaning. A garden structure should feel settled into its setting, not pressed tightly against fences, hedges or planting.
Know when professional preparation is worthwhile
A small storage shed on stable, level ground may be within reach of a capable homeowner. A larger building with glazing, insulation, integrated electrics or a bespoke oak frame is a different proposition. Soil conditions, drainage, services and precise tolerances all become more consequential as the structure grows in scale and value.
