Bridle joints and scarf joints

A bridle joint is, in simple terms, an open mortise and tenon. The end of one timber is cut into a fork, while the mating member forms the central tongue. It is useful where a conventional enclosed mortise is impractical, particularly at the end of a post or beam.

Scarf joints solve a different problem: joining two lengths of timber end to end. For long wall plates, beams or rails, a carefully designed scarf spreads forces across interlocking faces rather than creating a weak butt joint.
