Acoustics are often considered late in a project, once the structure, windows and layout have already been chosen. Yet the most effective results begin with the intended use. Before selecting a wall finish or specifying glazing, consider the sounds you want to keep out, the sounds you want to keep in, and the quality of sound you want within the room. These are related, but they are not the same thing.

Glazing and doors: the detail that changes the result

Generous glazing gives a garden room its connection to the landscape, drawing in daylight and framing the changing seasons. It can also be the point at which unwanted noise enters most easily. The answer is not simply to specify the thickest glass available. The size and position of the glazing, the quality of the frame, the seals, and the type of noise all matter.

Double glazing with high-quality seals will be entirely suitable for many garden offices and leisure rooms. Where traffic noise or other persistent external sound is a factor, an acoustic laminated pane or a specialist glazed unit may offer a worthwhile improvement.
